Leonardtown Butterfly Trail

 

The Leonardtown Butterfly Trail first opened in July 2021 and has recently been refreshed with new stops, updated activities, and even more ways to explore downtown Leonardtown!

This family-friendly trail highlights historic landmarks, beautiful outdoor spaces, hidden works of art, local businesses, and fun discoveries throughout our vibrant Southern Maryland town. Along the way, visitors can enjoy the Butterfly Trail Adventure, search for trail markers, explore public art, and learn more about the places that make Leonardtown special.

As the only designated Arts & Entertainment District in Southern Maryland, Leonardtown is the perfect place for a trail that blends art, history, nature, and community. The trail continues to celebrate creativity throughout town, including the original butterfly banners and flags created by local artist Eric Clark Jackson of Bay Fibers Studio. Eric created these unique works of art using batik, an Indonesian wax-resist dyeing technique applied to cloth. His work offers a contemporary take on traditional wildlife illustration, with much of his subject matter inspired by the land and water of the Chesapeake region.

Visitors can start their adventure at the Leonardtown Visitor Center at the Old Jail Museum, where Butterfly Trail brochures are available.
